Two Quick Facts

The pink river dolphin, also known as the boto, is a unique species of dolphin that lives exclusively in freshwater. It inhabits large portions of the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, including regions of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela.

While the pink river dolphin remains relatively abundant—with an estimated population in the tens of thousands—it faces growing threats. In certain areas, it is classified as vulnerable due to habitat fragmentation caused by dams, as well as increasing contamination in rivers and lakes.
